Description

NGC 147 is a dwarf spheroidal elliptical satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy and is roughly the same distance from us at 2.5 million light years. Although its fairly bright at 9.68 magnitude total brightness, its fairly large at about 10.5 by 6 arc minutes, so its surface brightness is fairly low. Being a dwarf, its actually quite a small galaxy at only about 7000 light years across

I have imaged this before and captured NGC 147's eight know globular clusters, but wanted to get a deeper image to see if I could resolve some stars in the galaxy. I had a string of nights with good seeing in my backyard, so took the opportunity to try for a deeper image and here is the result. A good number of stars are visible along with a few star streams crossing near the center of the core and at the outer edges. There is an especially long and wide star stream passing diagonally just below the center of the galaxy. There are also some interesting small, but extended, dark zones that appear to be real voids or dust knots. Nearby NGC 185 has some larger and more obvious dust knots, so this might be the correct way of interpreting these dark voids.

Version B has marks the location of all of NGC 147's globular clusters.

Each 8 minute exposure stacked here was composed of 320 1.5 second subs live-stacked in SharpCap.
